Fairytale horror game

Little Misfortune is an interactive story from Killmonday Games. It tells you the story about an imaginative eight-year-old girl named Misfortune Ramirez Hernandez. In the game, Misfortune seeks the prize of Eternal Happiness to give it to her mother. Thus, with the help of her new friend, Mr. Voice, she will venture into the woods filled with mysteries and bad luck. Little Misfortune is a game focused on exploration and characters, both sweet and dark. It is a fairy tale horror game, reminiscent of Brothers Grimm, and is a poisonously sweet adventure that will take players on a very grown-up journey across a wide scary outside world.

A glittery horror adventure

Little Misfortune shares the same universe with the cult video game, Fran Brow. It begins with a mysterious voice in Misfortune’s head asking her to play a game in exchange for eternal happiness. The girl agrees because she’d love to give the prize to her mum. What follows is an interactive adventure. Unlike Fran Brow, which employs point-and-click gameplay, Little Misfortune lets you move left and right through each scene at your own pace.

You can interact with objects and discuss them with Mr. Voice. You can also make decisions that will come back later in the story. Additionally, you can throw glitter at any moment to brighten terrible things such as dead animals. However, while the game starts with a very pure girl drawn in a cartoon-like world, Little Misfortune is surprisingly dark. The game leans heavily on real-world horrors alongside the more supernatural scares.

It tackles topics like abuse and even suicide, which tosses in a feeling of shock and unpleasantness. That feeling isn’t helped by the tonal mismatch that placed these adult fears alongside juvenile humor.  All in all, while the game may look like a children’s game, this is not a game for younger players. It's too bad, though, because other than some minor puzzles, the only thing left to do is unravel dialogues and plot twists.
